Powwow

I recently attended my first powwow, sponsored by the Cabazon Band of Cahuilla Indians, in Indio, California. The costumes were magical, the singing mesmerizing.

The celebration was indoors with groups of dancers dancing in a central arena as they competed for prize money, quickly and passionately moving in and out of spotlights of different colors as they danced to the music. These images are candid shots, taken as I walked around the dance arena handholding my camera and searching for unobstructed views.
